We visited the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens orchid show and were able to take pictures of these beautiful orchids. Paphiopedilum, often called the Venus slipper, is a genus of the lady slipper orchid subfamily Cypripedioideae of the flowering plant family Orchidaceae. The genus comprises some 500 accepted taxa including several natural hybrids.
The characteristic pouch that resembles a slipper is used to promote pollination not to trap the pollinator as some have supposed. The pouch or labellum collects the nectar that attracts the pollinator insects. When the insects climb out of the pouch they brush past the staminode depositing the pollen.
The genus is native to Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, southern China, New Guinea and the Solomon and Bismarck Islands. The species and their hybrids are extensively cultivated, and are known as either paphiopedilums, or by the abbreviation paphs in horticulture. The type species of this genus is Paphiopedilum insigne.
The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a 15-acre (6.1ย ha) botanical garden located at 900 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota, Florida. The Gardens are located on the grounds of the former home of Marie and William Selby.
